What's the difference between counseling and coaching?

Counseling is usually defined as the service of assistance and guidance in coping with personal, emotional, relational, or psychological difficulties.

Primary target areas include addressing uncomfortable emotions, healing past wounds, reparing damaged relationships, etc.

Coaching, while very similar to counseling, is the service of assistance and guidance in overcoming a particular challenge or developing new skills.

Primary target areas include work skills, relationship skills, changing habits, overcoming growth barriers, etc.

People usually seek counseling in response to personal pain. Therefore, in addition to new coping skills, counseling often provides comfort and the healing of personal and relational wounds.

Examples of Counseling include:

  • Recovering from a divorce.

  • Relieving the pain of uncomfortable emotions.

  • Repairing toxic relationships.

People seek coaching when they desire to grow and improve a particular area or skill.  Personal pain may or may not be present. Therefore, coaching provides new ideas, objective feedback, and accountability.

Examples of Coaching include:

  • New parenting skills as children age.

  • New communication skills.

  • Developing new work habits.

  • Breaking and replacing bad habits.
